ABOUT THE WORK

In 1818, the treadmill was invented as a form of punishment in British prisons. More than 200 years later, it has become a cultural symbol — and running has turned into a defining feature of modern life. Today, running is not only exercise; it is a sign of discipline, ambition, control, and identity.

With the performance project Gyldne Tider, Jonas Erboe stages running and the treadmill as a historical artifact, an aesthetic object, and a social phenomenon. The project explores how a simple, ancient movement has evolved into a cultural obsession — a kind of collective fever.

Gyldne Tider is a nationwide performance project unfolding throughout 2026. Over the course of one year, Erboe will complete 12 marathon runs — one each month — on a golden treadmill. Each marathon takes place at a unique location across Denmark, forming a chapter in a larger work that investigates running as cultural practice and symbol. What are we running from? Where are we going? And why?

Each performance is documented through photography and video, allowing the project to be experienced locally, nationally, and digitally.
Gyldne Tider culminates in an exhibition in 2027, where the performances, documentation, and physical elements are brought together as a single, overarching work.
