ABOUT THE WORK

Sisu is a project of 4 paintings (150x140 cm) with the letters S-I-S-U written in one of the canvas’s four squares defined by the stretcher bar in the middle.

Sisu is a Finnish expression from the word sisus that means something inner or inside. It’s an expression derived from the wartime in the early 20th century that since became a common expression used to describe the special Finnish toughness – often in relation to sports. Sisu are especially exemplified by the strong Finnish runners in the 20s-40s. They had sisu.

These paintings are made with a palette that reminiscent of The New York School, and are an exploration of the expressive and symbolic potential of the basic aspects of the painting process itself - brushwork, color, shape, texture.
